A colon is used to :
 

1- Introduce a list of items
Examples :

  • This is what you should do : clean the room, wash the dishes and go to bed.
  • My sister gets good marks in all subjects : English, maths, geography and history.
     

2- Introduce a quotation
Examples :

  • Shakspeare said : "To be or not to be, that's the question".
  • Montapert said : "All lasting business is built on friendship".


3- Introduce a comment or explanation at the end of a sentence
Examples :

  • I have a surprise for you : we are going to adopt a dog.
  • We had to stop after only thirty kilometers : there was a leak in the petrol tank.
